Recreational Therapists

Special Requirements

A qualified recreational therapist is someone who is nationally certified as a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS), usually referred to as recreational therapists. Qualified professionals are certified through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) http://www.nctrc.org, which requires a bachelors degree or higher from an accredited university, a formal internship and the passing of a national certification examination. A CTRS must maintain their credential every five years through the NCTRC recertification process. Academic programs in therapeutic recreation or recreational therapy emphasize course work in the physical, biological, and behavioral sciences and recreation and leisure theory.

To be awarded the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential, the candidate must meet the eligibility requirements and pass a knowledge-based exam.  When the candidate is awarded the CTRS credential, it serves as evidence that the individual, through knowledge and experience, has met NCTRC's CTRS Certification Standards.
Internship:
Applicants will need to complete a minimum 480-hour, twelve (12) consecutive week internship in therapeutic recreation services that uses the therapeutic recreation process as defined by the current NCTRC Job Analysis Study under the supervision of an on-site field placement supervisor who is NCTRC CTRS certified. Make sure you complete at least 20 hours per week and no more than 45 hours per week. Your primary CTRS Supervisor must be employed full time and work a minimum of 32 hours a week at the agency with at least 50% of the job duties in TR services
