Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

Special Requirements

Presently only New Mexico requires licensure to begin practice in a diagnostic medical sonographer career. However the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) offers general physical principles and instrumentation exams to certify those who would like to begin work as medical sonographers or Ultrasound technicians. In addition you will have to pass a specialty exam such as gynecologic sonography, neurosonography or abdominal sonography.

The only means of obtaining the RDMS credential is by examination. Required examination prerequisites must be fully met before an applicant can earn an ARDMS credential. Applicants are required to pass two comprehensive examinations to earn the RDMS credential listed below:

Physics Examination:

· Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI)

Specialty examinations within the RDMS credential:

· Abdomen

· Breast

· Fetal Echocardiography

· Neurosonology

· Obstetrics & Gynecology

ARDMS Exam Application:

ARDMS currently offers nine (9) prerequisites under which to apply for an ARDMS examination. An applicant must select a prerequisite under which he or she wants to apply for an ARDMS specialty examination and/or the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination. Each prerequisite requires (1) the appropriate educational background, (2) necessary clinical ultrasound or vascular experience and (3) required documentation that must be submitted with the application. All three components of the applied-for prerequisite must be met before an application can be approved and an applicant can be allowed to examine.
