Orthodontists
Special Requirements
Orthodontists are considered to be specialists in dentistry.
GENERAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
Licensure requirements include graduation from an accredited dental school and passage of written and practical examinations.
Completion of a post graduate training program is also required to specialize in a specific area of dentistry such as orthodontics.
Dentists also cannot have a criminal record.
An applicant for dental licensure shall be a graduate and a holder of a diploma or a certificate from a dental program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, which consists of either a pre-doctoral dental education program or at least a 12-month post-doctoral advanced general dentistry program or a post-doctoral dental education program in any other specialty.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed four years of college before entering dental school.
- Pass the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) in order to enter dental school. When selecting students, schools consider scores earned on the DAT, the applicant’s grade point average in college and the applicant’s interview and recommendations.
- An applicant for dental licensure shall be a graduate and a holder of a diploma from an accredited or approved dental school recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, which usually lasts for 4 academic years following college, and includes classroom instruction and laboratory work in the sciences, anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry and physiology.
- Obtain the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or an equivalent degree called Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD.)
- Those who want to teach or work in a specialized area of dentistry must complete a postgraduate training program. Dentists who want to teach or do research usually spend an additional 2 - 5 years in advanced dental training programs operated by dental schools or hospitals.
LICENSE RENEWAL:
Every person holding an active or inactive license or a full-time faculty license shall, on or before March 31, renew his license. Every person holding a teacher's license, temporary resident’s license, a restricted volunteer license to practice dentistry or dental hygiene or a temporary permit to practice dentistry or dental hygiene shall, on or before June 30, request renewal of his license.
