Special Requirements
Logisticians usually need at least a bachelor degree in logistics or other related field. Students complete a variety of courses in areas such as logistics management, information systems, supply chain management, order processing, sourcing, and warehousing. Many prospective logisticians complete internships or gain part-time employment to gain practical experience. Most employers provide on the job training for new logisticians that include instruction on company policies, procedures, and expectations. Logisticians often gain certification from professional associations such as the International Society of Logistics and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.They must stay up to date on the current advancements in the field and they often complete continuing education and additional training throughout their careers.
The International Society of Logistics (SOLE):
Starting early in the logistician's career, he/she begins by earning the recognition as a Demonstrated Logistician, then Demonstrated Senior Logistician and finally Demonstrated Master Logistician. These recognitions are provided based on continuous experience and professional development. The next step in the process provides for certification in Logistics Chain Management as a Certified Master Logistician (CML). The ultimate recognition in the profession is attained through the achievement of certification as a Certified Professional Logistician (CPL). This certification covers the entire scope of practice that the logistics professional will engage in during his/her career.
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT):
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport International offers international professional qualifications in logistics and transport at diploma level. Courses are delivered locally by accredited training providers. The certificates and diplomas for the international courses are awarded by the Institute’s headquarters in London, U.K. Candidates who successfully pass the examinations, and subject to meeting qualifying experience criteria, may be awarded post designatory letters for member (MILT) and Chartered Member (CMILT). This is a badge of international recognition.
